DOCX vs PDF: which one should you use?

DOCX is the better working format when you still expect to edit the content. PDF is the better sharing format when you want the layout to stay fixed.

That difference matters because people usually convert to PDF only after the document is finished. If you send DOCX instead, the file may open differently on another device or editor.

A quick rule of thumb:

• Use DOCX while drafting and editing.
• Use PDF when you need stable formatting for sharing or printing.
• Convert from DOCX to PDF right before sending the final version.

If your goal is a clean handoff, PDF is usually the safer choice.
